What is Ayanasi?

no sword. no gun. mostly running.

You're stuck in a forest that gets worse every time the sun goes down. Things crawl, dash, leap and teleport at you, and you can't just fight back. You dodge.

Scoop up the glowing power-ups scattered around to level up, and every level lets you pick a new trick: a speed burst, a decoy, a wall, a slowing paint puddle, a shockwave that sends everything flying. Each of the three heroes has their own set of five.

Days are long and manageable. Nights are short and nasty: different creatures come out, and a red portal starts following you around. Step into it on Night 5 and win, and you've beaten the game, for now. Or skip the portal and see how long you can keep going.

Gameplay: Ylise standing in the forest clearing on Day 1, shield ring around her, a power-up nearby and her skill bar at the bottom
Day 1. One shield, one skill, and a power-up to grab.

How to play

one rule: don't get touched.
1

Pick a hero

Ylise, Fynn or Eryn. Each starts with one skill and can unlock four more as the run goes on.

2

Dodge everything

Move with the keyboard, a gamepad, or by dragging your thumb anywhere on a touch screen. You start with one shield that takes a hit for you.

3

Grab power-ups, level up

Collect the power-ups to fill your XP bar. Each level, pick one of three cards: a new skill, a stronger skill, or more shields.

4

Make it to morning

Survive the night and the creatures it brought fade at dawn. Your score climbs every second you stay alive.

There's a fourth seat at the character select. It stays empty until you know the right buttons. Old-school players might have a guess.

Day, then night

the clock in the corner is not decoration

Day about a minute

  • A steady trickle of enemies, and a few more with every day you survive.
  • The Shark only hunts in daylight.
  • Time to level up and get your skills ready.

Night about 30 seconds

  • Two creatures arrive right away, then more keep coming until dawn.
  • The Kapre and Manananggal only come out at night.
  • Adrenaline: your skills recharge 10% faster in the dark.
  • At dawn, everything the night brought disappears.

The boss portal

When night falls, a red portal opens somewhere in the forest. On Night 1 it just sits there. After that it starts drifting toward you, a little faster every night. Walk into it and you're pulled into a boss fight. Win, and you skip straight to morning with the field wiped clean. Win on Night 5, and you've reached the ending. Lose, and that's the run.

Waits on the other side of the boss portal. Watch for the elbow drop.

Level up, pick a card

every run builds differently

Every power-up you collect fills your XP bar. Fill it and the game pauses to offer you three cards: unlock a new skill, level one up (skills go to level 5), or take a shield.

Chain pickups quickly to build up Fever. While it's lit, every power-up is worth double XP.

Every fifth level is a milestone, with bigger prizes to pick from:

FAQ

asked, answered
How do I play it?

Tap Play in your browser. It runs on computers, tablets and phones with nothing to install. On a phone, turn it sideways.

An Android version is on the way. The Google Play badge above will work once it's out.

Does it cost anything?

No. The web version is free, with no ads and no sign-up.

How long is a run?

A day-and-night cycle takes about a minute and a half. Reach Night 5 (about seven minutes in) and beat the boss behind the portal to see the ending. More nights are coming.

If you never step into the portal, the nights just keep coming. Good for chasing a high score.

Is my progress saved?

Each run starts fresh: new hero pick, level 1, one shield. That's the point. Your settings, volume and key bindings are remembered in your browser.

How does the high score list work?

If your score makes the top ten, you can type a name to put on the board. Only that name, your score, how many days you lasted and which hero you played are saved. No account or email needed. You can skip it.

Can I fight back?

A bit. Shockwaves and mines knock enemies away, and each hero's super fights back for a while. Mostly though, it's about not getting touched.

Is it OK for kids?

It's cartoony and there's no gore. A few of the creatures, like the Manananggal and the Wendigo, are spooky and come with growls and shrieks. Worth a quick look first if your kid scares easily.

Does it need internet?

It needs a connection to load, and the high score list needs one too. The game itself plays the same either way once it's open.

It's still being worked on?

Yes. Ayanasi is playable from start to the Night 5 ending, but balance, art and new nights are still being added. Some creatures are still wearing their placeholder looks.

I found a bug / I have an idea.

Please send it to [email protected]. Which hero you played, which night you were on, and your device help a lot.
